| 사업내용 | SNU carried out an Educational ODA project, “Empowerment and Capacity Development Project of Souphanouvong University, Laos” funded by Korea International Cooperation Agency, 2014-2017. Souphanouvong University (SU) was established in Luang Prabang (the northern area of Laos) in 2003. SU services northern region of Laos covering eight provinces in the north which are mountainous and maintains high biodiversity of forest ecosystem. Under the Faculty of Agriculture and Forest Resource, the Department of Forest Resources was established in 2006. Within the ODA project, SNU conducted a cooperative research for upgrading the curriculum of forestry bachelor degree programs of SU. Within the research, SNU forestry expert team provided consultations for SU on the forestry program. We conducted a need assessment of education program for forestry professionals offered by SU. This paper aims to assess needs of higher education in forestry of SU which is designed to supply forestry professionals to be employed for forestry development in northern Laos. We identified the expertise of forestry professionals in need and the gaps in forestry curriculum yet to be filled by conducting a survey. A sample consisted of university faculty members and forestry governmental officials was selected and questions using a questionnaire were asked. Priorities in importance and adequacy of curriculum contents required for building forestry-specific and generic competencies were measured. We found the following components of SU forestry curriculum are in need for further upgrading competencies of forestry graduates: (1) comprehensive forest management considering multiple forest services and global negotiations, (2) technologies for forest management planning, (3) field skills and team work, and (4) problem solving and social relations. The proposed changes in forestry curriculum can be applied for revising forestry curriculum at SU to meet the demand for forestry higher education in northern Laos. |
