1. Background
Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common type of congenital anomaly and the second leading cause of death in infancy and childhood, particularly in developing countries. Mongolia lacks comprehensive medical and surgical care for CHD due to limited human resources, capacity of medical staff and infrastructure. JW Lee Center for Global Medicine led by Professor Woong-Han Kim has been cooperating with a number of countries including Mongolia, to strengthen the capacity of local medical staff and to promote a team-based approach in congenital heart surgery and patient care. The program includes dissemination of medical knowledge and hands-on experience to the local medical staff, from diagnosis, surgery, to post-op care. Furthermore, an evaluation research has been conducted to investigate the performance and the impact of the program.

2. Activities and Output
1) Surgical intervention/Ultrasound diagnosis/Post-op care
The whole progress beginning forms the echocardiogram, surgery to post-operative care is done jointly by the multi-professional Korean and Mongolian medical staffs, including cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists, perfusionists, scrub nurses and ICU nurses.

2) Medical staff training
All of the processes of the ultrasound diagnosis, surgery and post-op care are part of hands-on training. Throughout the whole patient-care process, Korean staff share their knowledge and skills that can be applied in local setting which requires active communication with the local staff. During the program, each medical profession (cardiologist, perfusionist, ICU nurse, anesthesiologist) gives lectures, and there is a case-review conference by the end of the mission to review the cases of surgical cases during the visit. This conference provides a space and opportunity to review the whole process of surgical patient management, which includes diagnosis, post-op care and the follow-up for each patient.

3) Program evaluation research
To evaluate the performance and the impact of the program, evaluation research is conducted. The formative evaluation includes building a logic model of the program, mapping out the processes from input to output, and analyzing the contextual factors that influence the performance of the program. Surveys and interviews were conducted to measure the satisfaction, motivation, confidence and teamwork of local medical staff. Furthermore, the study examines the effect of cardiac surgery on the patient caregiver’s the quality of life. Caregiver of the patient who gets surgery on the mission and who come for follow-up check is encouraged to participate in the survey and the interview.
TEAM BASED LEARNING
