사업내용 Dr. Lee Jong-wook – Seoul Project is the program to build capacity for healthcare of Lao PDR since 2010. This project has been training 83 medical professionals from Laos in Seoul National University under the support from Korea Foundation for International Health (KOFIH). It began with the meaning of Minnesota Project that trained more than 78 professionals from SNU who were trained at the Minnesota University with the support from the United States in the 1950s.

Prof. Shin, Hee Young, the chair of steering committee of the project, had formed a collaborative system with SNU College of Medicine - Hospital – School of Dentistry – College of Nursing – R&DB Foundation and has actively supported trainees for training and further development.

The trainees were from University of Health Sciences and central hospitals of Lao PDR and were selected through the interview. University of Health Sciences (UHS) is the only institution that trains medical/dentistry doctors in Lao PDR, and the central hospitals train the students of UHS as teaching hospitals.

Total of 83 people have been invited to Korea for the training so far. Trainees are categorized according to the period they were invited and trained: For 1 year 60 people, 6 months 12 people, 1 ~ 4 months 9 people, Ms/PhD course 2 people. When categorized into the fields, Basic Medicine 13 people, Clinical Medicine 44 people, Dentistry 9 people, Nursing 9 people, Biomedical Engineering 3 people, Laboratory Technique 2 people, Health Policy and Medical Education 3 people.

After the training in Korea, they were also provided with consultant dispatch, medical textbooks written in Lao language, equipment/infrastructure, TOT(Training of Trainers) education and pilot research, high-level manager exchange.

As a result of this support program, capacity and satisfaction of Lao medical students were significantly improved (KDI study), and the Minister of Health of Lao PDR was invited to Korea. The number of treatment of pediatric cancer, which was previously regarded as untreatable, increased to more than 190 cases in Lao.
